It’s up to us

While the Government and local advocacy bodies do an exceptional job at driving new job growth and local development, we as individuals can all play our part to help make a difference and support the region’s economy. It’s easy to do… Just make 1 simple change to where you spend.
With a population of over 150,000 people (and the 5th largest city in Queensland), we can spur new opportunities and greater wealth by simply spending our money with local businesses, rather than by the click of a button.
If just $100 per person was spent each month here in Cairns with a LOCAL business, we’d have an extra $15 million circulating in our economy. That’s a change that has a huge cumulative effect over time.

Cairns Regional Council already do, so why not you?

Cairns Regional Council has had a focus on buying local for many years now. From services to supplies, their purchasing policy puts Cairns-based companies first.
As one of the largest local employers, they know the difference that can be made by keeping money here in the regional economy.
What local purchases could you make for your home or business today?

How can you help?

Buy local wherever possible.

Whether it’s switching one purchase each month to a local supplier (or all of your purchases), you’ll be directly helping your local economy.

Let’s start making simple changes Use locally based service/product providers if you are in business, Shop locally and spread around your spend.
Every little bit helps because what goes around comes around!

If we can instill these habits now and create new behaviors both personally and in business, then we will have a stronger, financially stable community for years to come.

A note from Cairns Regional Council Mayor
Bob Manning

Working together during tough times builds stronger and more sustainable communities for years to come. There’s no doubt that businesses in Cairns are doing it tough right now. And that has a trickle down impact on everyone in our community, We need to keep businesses open and people in work if we are to weather this unprecedented global event.
We need to go about our day-to-day lives as much as possible while heeding advice on social distancing and personal hygiene. But this is not the time to stop spending.
We need to buy local to keep money circulating in our community.
